i’m having a really difficult time with graduate music theory. so much so, that it is effecting my sleep and my ability to focus. i’m stressed out. if i can just get through this semester, i think i might survive grad school. but damn, i’ve got to deal with the agonizing truth…that i suck at music theory. 

should i just give up and teach music at a church or something? not what i want to do, but at this point, it’d be easier than writing out the harmonic analysis for 3 full orchestral pieces. why can’t i just sing them? 

i really miss singing every day for hours at a time. i feel like i’m wasting my voice. so i’ve decided to start a new aria today. now if only i could decide which one.

i have an opera audition here in 9 days.

what’s that? oh yes, that’s lincoln center in nyc. 

now i’ll stop being obnoxious. BUT I’M SO EXCITED.

yes. i’m studying music. no, i don’t know what i’m going to do when i graduate.

i don’t just “sing”. music majors work just as hard as any other major AND we have to practice every freaking day. we have to push ourselves physically and emotionally in order to understand and portray the music. so please don’t ask me why i’m a music major.

i’m a music major because this is what i LOVE. it’s not about making tons of money or even being famous. i’d like to see YOU stand up in front of a crowd and sing a Puccini aria. it’s hard shit. and don’t even get me started on music theory.

vocal performance is NOT a “throw-away” major. i do not feel like i am wasting my time by studying music. yes, i have strange habits like getting at least 10 hours of sleep every night and using a neti pot 3 times a week, but i do these things because music is what i love.

and when i graduate, i’ll do whatever it takes not to “waste” my major. and i swear, if one more person tells me “you can always teach”, i will cut off their ears and feed them to some squirrels. i do not want to teach music! not until i’m at least 50 years old.

so please, be a little more understanding of what i’m doing with my life. i’d like to think that i’m pretty good at it. music is my passion, and just like any other major, we work our asses off to achieve our goals.
